What is Compost?
Compost is an organic material that is produced from the decomposition of food scraps and yard waste.
Composting Basics
Composting requires equal parts of brown and green material with the addition of water to fuel the composting process. Brown materials provide carbon and green materials provide nitrogen, this along with moisture is what is required to break down organic matter. Composting can actually give off heat due to the chemical reactions happening in the compost.
Benefits of Composting
- Enriches soil
- Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers
- Reduces methan emissions from landfills
- Lowers your cardon footprint
- Encourages production of beneficial bacteria and fungi
